Author talk: Jewish Illegal Immigration to the U.S.

October 28 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free; donations requested

“In After They Closed the Gates: Jewish Illegal Immigration to the US, 1921-1965,” Libby Garland discusses a part of Jewish immigration history that many of us have not known about. Understanding this history is crucially important, given the current attacks on undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers in our community.

For Jews this personal and collective history compels us to stand in solidarity with undocumented immigrants today who face injustice and deportation. For all of us, this piece of history stands out as one of many repeated and on going examples of racialized, restrictionist, discriminatory immigration policies that demand our engagement. Together we have the opportunity to deepen our understanding of what connects our history to our actions today.

There will be two opportunities to engage with Libby Garland: At Beit Ahavah in Florence on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 4:00, and at the First Church in Amherst where Lucio Perez is in Sanctuary on Monday, Oct. 29 at 5:30 (followed by a monthly potluck with Lucio at 6:30).
