Disability 101

Recommended for parents, teachers, politicians, supervisors and others. Disability 101 provides participants a basic understanding of what it means to have a disability. Learn basic information about the laws. Learn the do’s and don’ts from disability theory, manage access and become an ally.

Disability 101

Trainer: Dr. Madeline L. Peters

Dr. Peters has worked in higher education for the past 38 years, 30 of which she has served as the Director of Disability Services (DC) at UMass Amherst. Dr. Peters is a veteran, author, educator, and consultant. She has experience in successfully navigating and complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), and operating as an Accommodation Specialist/Advocate

Class Description

Recommended for parents, teachers, politicians, supervisors and others. Disability 101 provides participants a basic understanding of what it means to have a disability. Disability oppression is institutionalized on all levels. Societies mind set regarding people with disabilities is of the separate is equal ideology. People with disabilities do not have the same access as their able bodied peers. Overall lack of awareness of the physical and mental processes required of individuals with disabilities to take care of their daily needs is reflected in institutional policies and procedures which impact the lives of individuals with disabilities. Cultural norms, peoples’ attitudes, and behaviors keep people with disabilities from experiencing a holistic and environmentally balanced life. The lack of access interferes with people with disabilities securing support, services, and assistance. Learn basic information about the laws.
