For Freedoms Town Hall Event / “Art, Activism & Social (In)Justice”

October 12, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

The University Museum of Contemporary Art at UMass is proud to be a part of the For Freedoms 50 State Initiative, a national network of artists and institutions across the country who will stage art actions, town hall meetings, and special exhibitions to encourage broad participation and inspire conversation during the upcoming midterm elections. Founded by artists Eric Gottesman and Hank Willis Thomas and inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms (1941) — freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear — For Freedoms uses art to encourage and deepen public explorations of freedom in the 21st century.
Eric Gottesman will join UMass faculty and staff for a For Freedoms Town Hall event to explore and discuss the role of democracy, art, and civic action on our campus today. The For Freedoms Town Hall at UMass will focus on the social justice challenges our community faces. Titled “Art, Activism, and Social (In)Justice?,” the town hall seeks to highlight and discuss the ways art can be used to address issues of social justice in the valley.
Panelists will include: Stephanie Shonekan, Chair of Afro-American Studies, UMass; Joseph Krupczynski, Director of Civic Engagement and Service Learning, UMass; and Miatta Kawinzi, multidisciplinary artist and Visiting Professor at Hampshire College. There will be a voter registration table at the event. Join us!
Free and Open to all. Refreshments will be served.
