Honduras Coups and Caravans

June 25, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Honduras’ democracy has not been able to find stable footing since the U.S.-backed coup of 2009, and political dissidents continue to be jailed for protesting a deeply corrupt electoral system. Edwin Espinal and Raúl Álvarez are two Honduran political prisoners jailed in the maximum-security, military run ‘La Tolva’ prison for over 16 months. Edwin and Raúl were detained and denied due process for protesting the 2017 electoral fraud in Honduras, and both have a history of community organizing.

The conditions within the prison are truly awful and inhumane, with little direct sunlight, exposure to untreated sickness, and psychological torture being commonplace. You can help free Edwin and Raúl directly by donating or helping to raise money for their bail; hopefully they are awarded the opportunity at an upcoming bail hearing. The money will then be transferred to a scholarship fund for Honduran political prisoners upon the announcement of their trial. Come to this event on June 25th, 6:30 pm, at Friends’ Meeting Place in Northampton.

Asís Castellanos is a Honduran sociologist and teacher who has been active in the Honduran resistance movement since 2006.
Adrienne Pine is an anthropologist and professor at American University who has worked in Honduras for over 20 years, and is currently facing federal charges for protecting the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington against the U.S.-led attempted coup there.
