How Direct Action Campaigns Can Build Transformational Movements
April 2 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pmFree
George Lakey, recently retired from Swarthmore College, started a life of activist campaigning six decades ago. His first book was a manual for the Civil Rights Movement. His most recent book, Viking Economics, shares the results of nonviolent direct action campaigning in achieving the world’s most free and most just societies: Scandinavia. He co-founded the spiritual activist Earth Quaker Action Team which forced the 7th-largest bank in American to give up financing mountain top removal coal minding. His new book is How We Win: A Guide to Nonviolent Action Campaigning (Melville House, Dec 2018).
George Lakey will lead this lively, participatory event for this political moment. Learn the value of nonviolent direct action campaigns for winning concrete victories while laying the groundwork for larger, broad-based movements that can transform our country. Bill McKibben says, “If you want to be a soldier, you can go to West Point. If you want to be a nonviolent change-maker, George Lakey has both remarkable stories and remarkable insights.”
