The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (a.k.a. Chavez: Inside the Coup) is a documentary about the April 2002 coup attempt on the democratically elected Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez which briefly deposed him. The documentary argues that the coup d’état by an American-backed opposition party was the result of a conspiracy between various old guard and anti-Chávez factions within Venezuela and the United States.
A television crew from Ireland’s Radio Telifís Éireann happened to be recording a documentary about Chávez during the events of April 11, 2002.
Shifting focus, they followed the events as they occurred. During their filming, the crew recorded images of the events that they argue contradict explanations given by Chávez opposition, the private media, the US State Department, and White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer.
The two-day coup failed to topple Chávez, but the tumultuous event proved to be great dramatic material for two Irish filmmakers who happened to be making a documentary about Chavez asthe coup erupted. They captured footage of the massive opposition and pro-Chavez crowds and analyze how Venezuelan TV manipulated images for propaganda purposes.
Speakers will discuss the similarities between this film and the attempted coup on the current Maduro government.
